Life of the body and the life of the mind form a whole
The life of the body and the life of the mind are designated Japanese by the words: sei and mei. Seimei forms a whole: it expresses life in all its aspects. If doctors forget about the whole seimei and only consider the body, contenting themselves with examining it, they cannot really cure the patient. Body and mind, always united, interfere with each other. in health as in illness. In Japan, diseases are called "seimei diseases".
Such an approach corresponds to traditional oriental medicine.
In this discipline, doctors focus on sei-mei, auscult - they consider the whole body-mind. Sometimes it is enough for them to look at the patient, to scrutinize his face: the eyes, the complexion, the timbre of the voice give an indication of their acute intuition. When I stand behind you during za-zen, I can see very well what is wrong with some people. Illnesses, especially serious illnesses, come from deep weariness not only of the body but also of the mind, that is to say of the whole sei-mei.
...] When the mind is peaceful and clear, we want to work, to act, to participate: the body follows, and there is no illness. If, on the other hand, the mind is restless, anxious, complicated, the being is divided, it wears out and tires deeply. One can become really ill. How to acquire a strong sei-mei? Yoga, walking, activity habits, a natural life, tuned to the rhythm of the seasons, and healthy and simple food all go in this direction. I believe that the simplest and deepest way to have a strong sei-mei is to za-zen. If you practice za-zen, your body becomes warm, your eyes change, and then they appear luminous, deep and calm. Your face is rested, your complexion becomes lighter and you feel great energy. Our body, our mind exist forever. They are ku, meaning nothing, and this nothing is everything, meaning the universe. Have a strong sei-mei connecting you to the universe. Your life will be fiery, active and deep.
